Back on the Wayback - landed in 1990
You all know the deal, same as I did with 1998, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 1991 before this...
Here we are, I am ages 10 and 11, finishing 5th grade the first half of the year and starting the 6th in the second half...
Nothing spectacular about the setup. CD's didn't exist to me, even if they did on the other side of town. I still spent LOOOOONG nights up in the bedroom listening to the radio with a 90-minute cassette tape on pause to capture my favorite songs on. I rushed home from the bus to catch the video shows while I did (or didn't) do my homework before my mean-ass sister came home and bogarted the television to watch whatever bullshit she was going to watch.
You both know how this works, I will get down to business now...
January ... looks like this will be a slow start
February - the month without the silent R ... definite slow start!
March Kid N Play dropped "Kid N Play's Funhouse" and Hammer put out "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" on the same day, Salt N Pepa dropped "Black's Magic," which didn't have any videos that gave me a chubby that I recall, and Digital Underground dropped "Sex Packets," Public Enemy gave us "Fear of a Black Planet," an album foreshadowing the future in social networking on the internet to come 9 years later... Not really, but I'm just sayin'.
This was not a bad month at ALL.
April long-named A Tribe Called Quest dropped the equally exorbitantly long-titled "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm," a classic album no less. X-Clan called people sissies all over "To the East, Blackward"
May Ice Cube dropped "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" and I am LOVING how this year is unfolding.
June Eric B and Rakim "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em" and Boogie Down Productions showed us "Edutainment" and Poor Righteous Teachers gave is "Holy Intellect," Tragedy Khadafi, under his old alias 'Intelligent Hoodlum' put out a self-titled debut as well and D-Nice dropped "Call Me D-Nice".
July 2 Live Crew was "Banned in the USA" and Master Ace came with "Take a Look Around" and Special Ed with "Legal"
August NWA gave us "100 Miles and Runnin'" and Too $hort advised that "$hort Dog's in the House," while LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out." Vanilla Ice tried to fuck up the party with "To The Extreme," but you bought it, and I did too. Kool G Rap & DJ Polo dropped "Wanted: Dead or Alive"
September saw the release of K-Solo's "Tell The World My Name"
October Big Daddy Kane released "A Taste Of Chocolate," Boogie Down Productions came with "By All Means Necessary" while Ice T informed us that "Rhyme Pays"
November Run DMC came "Back From Hell" and it was atrocious... Apparently they FOUND this album in hell and released it when they came out.
December shows us Brand Nubian's "One For All," an album I can still ride to RIGHT now like the fucking classic it is.
Unknown and unclassified in date is EPMD's "Business as Usual"
Another year that was light in the tooth as it relates to the NUMBER of releases that I count, which would be 25 with a sparkling TWENTY FUCKING FOUR purchased/owned at some point in my life for the best score to date of 96%. I will volunteer that the Salt N Pepa album is the lone detractor and I will kill your mother in the face for trying to judge me for having had the Hammer OR Vanilla Ice albums, since they sold 18 and 11 MILLION copies each, respectively... You had a better chance of owning BOTH than neither, let alone either one of your choosing. Anyway, hidden in these 25 releases, we find somewhere between 7 and 11 classic albums, depending solely upon who you ask and whether or not you count Hammer and Vanilla Ice -- which I REFUSE to do, even though I own them both.
We will notice that the further in the past I go, the less albums per year we find, which is a testament to the life before the genre took dominant, but we also notice a linear (that means right along with it, fuckers) percentage in the number of QUALITY albums released at this time, which is why old heads like me look at the current generation and fucking scowl.
